Happy birthday (obviously) to my dear husband phenders. May you have many many more years of health and joy, and may I be there to enjoy them beside you. So *I* got the first present today! My dedicated love, while mowing the lawn (we're having a party tomorrow... it needed it), ran over a snake. Poor reptile. But luckily, another cold-blooded cute critter managed to avoid the wrath of the choppy machine! His(her?) name is Podlet. If you've ever seen "Walking with Dinosaurs" the BBC production, you might remember the episode about the Jurassic sauropods. Brachiosaurus, apatosaurus...so on and so forth. Well, the beginning has a lady dino laying eggs. And then they hatch!! The narrator refers to the baby dinos as "Sauropodlets." And then they flee to the deep forest their mother couldn't get into for safety amongst the undergrowth. But, the kicker is beautiful. As they run, their little butts wiggle soooo cute! Have you ever seen a puppy about 6 weeks or so, running as fast as his puppy legs can carry him? Soooo cute!! Pretty much nothing cheers me up as fast as the word "sauropodlet." Well, unfortunately, Podlet is not a dinosaur. On the good side, we couldn't afford to feed a growing apatosaurus. They grow a LOT. Podlet is named, obviously after a sauropodlet. I can only hope its a girl. My husband gave me three names to choose from; Podlet, Rex and B.T. BT would is short for "B----(name removed)'s turtle" And you guessed it! A turtle! An eastern box turtle to be exact, and I could find the scientific name if you really wanted. He/she is about 2" long or so. Lovely markings all over the shell and a very distinctive bright reddish-orange front legs. Teeny tiny, but not a hatchling tiny. So now he/she is in a temporary terrarium (with me watching the temp and humidity) with dirt (well, potting soil, it was cleaner), a little "pond", a sloping tall piece of wood as kind of a "lean-to." Let's see what else, oh yes, some Cretaceous fossil sponges that make a nice little burrow area for him, plus some various grass I "planted" until I have safe non-toxic plants to put in his new home (which will be much larger than the tank he is in now). He has a sumptous dinner of dandelion leaves, grapes, peach, the very very end bits of green onion, the green not the white end. Peas too. I don't know if I have to kill the slugs when I give those to him, because the ones here are almost as big as he is. Crickets are hard to find this year. I am SO not spending the day digging for worms while its husband's birthday. I think I will boil some chicken later for it and chop some tiny pieces. His mouth is so small I had to chop up the grapes Anyway, that's all about Podlet. For dinner we are going to have Fish Tacos. Don't laugh, I swear its true!! I made a peach salsa (rather nice) to go with it. For dessert we are having strawberries, peaches and oranges with whipped cream, and an Eiswine. I've never had Eiswine before, and I'm a little daunted that it might be too sweet for my taste. We shall see. Tomorrow is our BIG BBQ to belatedly celebrate our wedding with all of the people who couldn't make it to Austin. And those of whom we didn't invite because we didn't want to take the chance that they would show up and we'd have to feed them. Sorry guys, it's true. I'm a stingy bitch, get used to it. Lots of booze, people, food, grilling... yay!! Maybe presents lol. phenders gets his present tonight with dinner or desert. I'll tell you tomorrow what it is if he doesn't. Wow I think that's it for now, for yay for an exciting and fun weekend! By the way, that kitten is named "Roswell." Super alien kitty or something. |
