Rest in Peace Scotty

So I'm a day late, I am not very good at keeping up to date with the news.

James Doohan died yesterday at the age of 85. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's. I had never had the opportunity to read over all of the things he had done in his life (I was not so much of a geek that I bought his autobiography), and was amazed to find that he fought at D-day!

I will never forget the character Scotty, having grown up with Trekkie parents. I most clearly remember Scotty armed with a 'traditional highland Claymore' (which was not a Claymore at all!). Its funny, I never really watched the origial series enough to be sure, but wasn't that the alternate universe episode? Classic.

Personally, I watched more of The Next Generation (I'm a heretic, I know, I just couldn't stand William Shatner's acting). And one of my favorite episodes of all time was the one where they rescued Captain Scott from a repeating transporter loop in a wrecked vessel. He drank green whiskey, told many great stories, and gave Geordi great advice. "You cannae tell them the right time it will take to fix it! You have to tell them a longer time so that you look like a miracle worker when its done sooner!" Ok, not exact quote, but I don't have a VCR and all of my episodes (my brother got the original series) are on VHS. I'm working on it, dammit.

I know that all day, people are going to be telling their favorite Star Trek episodes, and since most of my friends are geeks like me, I know its something I'm going to be hearing about all day. Stories about their favorite lines, episodes, when they met James Doohan at a convention (yes, I know people who have. The chick who played Deanna Troi was at the one I went to)... etc and so on.

What surprises me the most about today, is that when I checked my friends' webcomic, they had posted a drawing of him and a beautiful line:

"Mission log complete, one to beam up."

I'm sure that its going to get old soon, hearing that James Doohan was "beamed up."

James Doohan requested that his remains be launched into space like those of Gene Roddenberry's. I think that is a wonderful thing.

I believe I have gone on long enough, which is nice because I'm not crying anymore. I never thought about how much I cared, and was entirely surprised to find out how much it mattered to me. There aren't too many actors out there that have touched me enough so that I had more of an "wow, that is very sad," reaction. Madeline Khan was one, DeForest Kelly, obviously another.

Have a nice day everyone. My sympathies about the London bombings will be seperate from this.
