It seems a few people, ones that don't look like me, have a problem with me pointing out what happened in New Oreleans was the result of multi-layered racism. Everything that I say is invalid if it doesn't coincide with white middle class reality. There are 10 thousand forums and bulletin boards where white people are saying, "Good, let the N*ggers die," yet, I'm called a racist and I'm the one that is told I hate white people. White supremacy breeds this notion that what black people have to say is insignificant unless it agrees with this notion that color doesnt matter. Color does. If the assumption is "Everyone has had the same experience, the same history, the same opportunities, the same challenges as I have, and they just choose not to excel, that's their fault because America is the land of the free and anyone can succeed if they just put their mind to it," then anything that Black people say to highlight the many differences of our experiences is shut down immediately as racist. The simple fact that so many white people want to minimize the effects of slavery is the single most racist act that white people perpetuate every day. I use the same example all the time and I get the same violent response. Let me take one of your children. One of your beautiful, innocent, bright-eyed white children, your flesh and blood, and let me beat, , torture them. Let me take one of your Caucasian children and house them in a dungeon for a year, with no contact from their family members, surrounded by people that don't speak the same language as them with rats, maggot infested food, dead bodies all around them and no sign of salvation. Then, let me take your beautiful white child and brand them like cattle, put him or her on a ship with other people piled on top of them, unable to move, while I them for recreation and dozens of people die around them daily. I'm going to keep them on that boat for three months in temperatures of over 100 degrees until their bodies are ravaged with disease and then I'm going to sell them off to the highest bidder. Next, I'm going to take your beautiful white child and I'm going to force him or her to labor for 16 hours a day, I'm going to beat the flesh off them for trying to escape, I'm going to force your son or daughter to be bred like cattle and sell off their children for my profit. I'm going to beat them so brutally that they give up their God. I'm going to deny your child the right to read or write and I'm going to force them to accept than anything that has to do with their culture is evil. If I do let them keep their children, I'm going to raise that child from birth to death as inferior. I'm going to tell your child that everything about them is ugly, their stringy hair, their pale pink skin, and their bodies. In addition, if you give me permission, I'm going to do that to every generation of your family for 250 years. Then, when I'm done, when I've finished ripping every bit of humanity away from your lineage, I'm going to return them to you with NO APOLOGIES, NO PUNISHMENT. There's no healing, no therapy, nothing to correct the hundreds of years of abuse. I'm simply going to say, "Let it go, it was in the past." The reaction to my little scenario is always the same. "You bitch, you are sick. You racist! How dare you!" Not once has a white person said to me, "Oh dear God, I'm sorry, now I see things differently and I'll try to have more compassion for the struggles of African Americans." Not once has anyone said to me, "I can see how, now, after your example, that my experiences are different because I've never had to deal with not turning on the TV and seeing positive examples of myself. I've never had to be held accountable for my race. I've never had to be accused of being stupid just because of the color of my skin. Now I can see that there is a myriad of circumstances that Black people have that I have no comprehension of." That would be the enlightened, non-racist way to respond to the realization that that little story happened MILLIONS and MILLIONS of times to my ancestors. Beautiful, bright eyed, innocent Black children endured those horrors and more and white people won't even acknowledge that there are long-term effects that go far beyond their comprehension. No, I get, "I can't do anything about it now, it's not my fault, my ancestors didnt own slaves, my ancestors came here after slavery and they had it just as bad." Its that sort of heartless response that is racist. If color didnt matter, they would not be so flippant and calloused about the plight of the Africans who survived slavery. They are so arrogant they can't even have compassion for the millions of survivors of the Transatlantic slave trade because those victims were black, not their precious white children. Sadly, the victims of New Orleans had to endure much the same treatment and we see people writing it off as poor political planning without an ounce of compassion for the human beings that have suffered a pain that will haunt them for the rest of their natural lives. My grandparents were civil rights leaders. They put their lives on the line so that I could have the opportunities that I have today. White people dont have any idea how functioning in a society that hates you for the color of your skin effects the human psyche. Your grandparents didnt have to endure what mine did. Your mother wasnt imprisoned for civil disobedience for trying to go to the movies. You never had to be the only white person in an all black hostile work environment like I have every single day. Then white people have the absolute nerve to suggest that everyone has the same opportunity. It sickens me to my very core. Ill let you in another little secret, most white people didnt read past the first two or three sentences of my little proposition because it disturbed them so greatly and now they are going to tell me, If you made it, other black people could, stop making excuses. Theres nothing new white people can say to me that I havent heard. When will they hear me? |

I can hear yuo from Australia - I have no idea how to respond without sounding patronising which i do not wish to do Nevertheless, i will say, that I found any form of racism abhorrent! and words cannot say how sorry I feel for your forbears and the horrific treatment they received! I know racism will always be with us but I hope enlightened people can continue to reduce it. Imagine even the concept a Black ( or is Afro-american the proper term now? no offence intended!!) I publicly apologise and offer myself forward as a sacrifice to atone for the sins of my race and sex. So many of us reading the mistresses words know the truth shes speaks. As a child I was taught to confess to my sins and make a penance. As a adult I know actions must speak louder than words. For each black slave that suffered each black women violated,i should suffer and be violated.like christ I offer myself willingly knowing when the trial comes the suffering will be real and I will be alone
