Honestly, the books, to me, didn't really even catch my eye. Yes, they do serve a purpose, showing her depth in understanding and craving to learn. What catches my eye is that look on her face......not quite defiant but very strong and with conviction.

Also love the look on the face.... not much to offer on this one just a nice setting..

But you reminded me of something with respect to what you want to portray here.... And I started thinking back to the middle ages. Yes Tough minded noble women holding the family castle against attackers while the husband was away (doing whatever). There are more then a few stories of women defending themselves, the family & all the villagers.... terrible times in general .... But amazing how many years we took to get around to today. (Now no idea how that popped in there)

Simply beautiful!

I like the idea of your new painting too. I could see it working in many different ways. perhaps her dressed in red and everyone else somewhat dark and grey. Or have the outline of her slightly thicker (in black) than anything else in the painting (as if a protective film) but then it's your painting, not mine, but it would be interesting to see how you would envisage it.
