I haven't had it done, but I work in the surgical field (in an allied role, not as a practitioner), and I can tell you that your physician is correct, this procedure, called a phacoemulsification, is one of the most common and least complicated surgical procedures that are done in any capacity. I'm sure you will find it well worth it.

True story. My grandmother had this procedure done several years ago, and the first thing she said after returning home with her greatly improved vision, was a chastisement of all of us for not telling her that the sofa she had recently purchased for her living room was so hideously ugly. LOL. Needless to say, the surgery was a great success.
