(algo: pain; philia: attachment to) refers to sexual arousal gained by pain sensations. An algophile may be involved in S/M, however it seems that the majority are not. The registration of pain is caused by the release of chemicals such as bradykinin, substance P and prostaglandins. People playing with pain normally desire to create enough sensation to trigger the release of these chemicals with their anesthetic, euphoric and trance-like qualities. An additional aspect of pain is that it can trigger a reaction from the autonomic nervous system causing an increased rate of breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure, all of which can enhance sexual sensitivity or experience. CAUTION: Pain produced from activities that harm the body can cause serious health problems. If blood is involved it would also be considered unsafe sex.
