Unfortunately there are lots reasons why a car might be running rough...it's tough to diagnose over a distance. Has it been a while since it's had a tuneup where spark plugs and wires were replaced? That could be the culprit. It could be a bad seal or a leak in a vacuum hose, which would be a low-cost fix. It could be a clogged fuel or air filter...another easy and cheap fix. It might be bad ignition timing. You'll probably need a mechanic to run a diagnostic on it. Crossing my fingers that it will ultimately be something minor.

I do understand your pain. I once had my car break down at 5 a.m., 60 miles from the airport where I was going to fly out for a rare visit with my sub. Missed my flight, which I couldn't reschedule, lost several hundred dollars in non-cancelable hotel rooms, and worst of all, missed seeing her. It's uncanny how they never break down when you're heading somewhere you don't want to go.

In Australia, our most common problem with being hard to start and idling rough while still running on all cylinders is the fuel, the ethanol content tends to foul the plugs and the best fix is injector cleaner in the tank and using premium fuel, I still drive a 49 Lincoln, one of 6 in this country, all the other coments make good sense, but this should be your first port of call, Laurie x

If I could offer practical advice I would but cars and me never see eye-to-eye anyway!

Borrow a car??? Steal one?

You have to get there! That's all I know!
