Mommies Bonding Over Bondage

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)– Parenting groups can be a great way for moms to connect and talk about taking care of their .

But CBS2’s Alice Gainer explored a very different kind of meet-up where moms who bond over risque topics say it’s making them better parents.

“For a long time, American culture has kind of idolized this domesticated mother, who cooks a meal and has all of this endless patience,” Sarah Forbes said.

She said there’s a lot more to being a good mother.

“That is part of motherhood, but so is having a fulfilling sex life,” Forbes said.

Forbes is a mother of two and author and has spent 12 years as curator for Manhattan’s Museum of Sex. In that time, she said she witnesses a sexual movement amongst mommies who found they can have it all in the boardroom, and now they want the same in the bedroom.

“Having a fulfilling sex life — that’s part of this total experience that women are seeking so desperately today,” she said.

You can credit “Fifty Shades of Grey,” but marriage and family therapist Dr. Jane Greer says it’s been a long time coming.

“It used to be that you know, romantic novels and book clubs and Fabio were the only way women could really edge in and access their sexual life,” Greer said.

Now, it’s not uncommon for moms to ditch the diaper dialogue for talk about experimenting with sex.

“It’s about time that women were making a choice about being tied up in knots, as opposed to being tied up in knots because of all the responsibility and weight of dealing with being a mom and a wife that they’ve been carrying,” Greer said.

At her monthly mom group, there is less talk about raising a family and more about how one actually becomes a mother in the first place.

“You’re not supposed to be here bitching about your ,” mom Sid Azmi said.

Azmi hosts the group at her Park Slope adult shop.

“It’s very liberating to be talking about taboo things,” she said.

“You don’t always want to feel like your body is constantly your ’s body too,” Yin Quan said.

Quan, a mother of two, teaches workshops on rope bondage. She said the classes are especially popular with parents who want to regain their bodies for their own play time.

“I believe everything is connected to empower your sexuality, empowers other parts of your life,” she said.

Experts agree that includes motherhood.
