Once Upon a Time: The Hunter Part III

Once Upon a Time: The Hunter Part III

The fae looks over her shoulder. Her heart is racing, skin clammy and covered with goose bumps. Tears of fear slide down her cheeks. She still feels the awful sensation of being trapped under the net. . The wolves running at full speed through the forest. Taking her away from her home, away from where the Hunter had found her.
The first night of flight, they found a little copse with fresh water nearby. Still shaken the little fae is too frightened to move away from her protectors. The wolves range around her, searching the area to make sure there are no threats to their charge. Even the wolves are on edge. They are not used to being the prey, they are the hunters, the predators. They catch enough food to feed themselves, snuffle out nuts and berries that the girl will eat.

When they return to the copse, the girl is curled up between the paws of the black wolf. Her eyes constantly darting around. Looking into the shadows of the trees. They can see that she shivers from time to time. The black wolf nuzzles against her cheek and whines because he feels her fear, something he has never felt in her before.

That night is a long and tense night. The girl waking with a jerk from small spaces of sleep where she sees the tall, big form of the Hunter in her dream. Back at the old hone site, the Hunter gathers all the equipment that he had used there. He will need that and more for his goal. The Hunter will pursue, he will capture, and with a dark smile touching his hard lips. He WILL OWN.

In the morning, the fae and her wolves leave the copse, she is diligent and clears all sign that they had been there. They move ever southward, towards home, the Seelie Court. She does not want to return to the court itself, she enjoys her freedom. The ability to live outside and be in the nature that calls to her very soul. By mid-day they reach the spot that she had in mind for her next refuge. A lovely and sheltered fairy ring. Set among the trees the spot is lovely. Green grass, flowers, and a small waterfall feeding the brook. Behind the waterfall is a cave that reaches far back into the hills, with several escape paths.

Day by day the fae relaxes more. Here she is able to hide, the fairy ring almost impossible to find, especially by human eye. Here she is able to fly among the trees and once more watch the animals of the woods. To care for the flowers and enjoy the company of the wolf pack. One of her joys is the waterfall. It provides not fresh and clear water for drinking, but it is wonderful to bath in.

One morning as the fae takes her morning shower she is unaware of eyes watching her. she stands under the brisk flow of water. Her auburn hair slicked back over her shoulders, fire against the alabaster of her skin. Eyes closed in pleasure she turns with arms outstretched, head back sapphire blue eyes closed. She hums softly with her joy. Hidden by the deep shadows of the woods stands the predator. The Hunter watches closely. All of his senses on high. Taking in every small detail of this creature that has been his target. He watches to see everything about the setup of the ring. He knows there is magic in the area, now he just has to learn how much and what steps need to be taken. He notes the wolves, how many, what their movements are because he knows too that he will need to get past these to gain his prize.

With each day the girl goes a little further from the fairy ring. Searching out the wonders of this forest. One day she picks up a scent that she had not smelled before. It is a lovely floral scent that tickles her senses. She follows it, and there. What a lovely flower she sees. Bright red, its petals glisten with the sheen of the morning’s dew. She flies over and around the flower bush. Looking for anything that might be dangerous to her. Seeing nothing that would alarm her she lands next to the bush. Takes a deep breath of the heady perfume of the flowers. She reaches out to stroke the silky petals and cries out, jumps back. Looking down at her finger and the small drop of blood on it. This blossom has thorns and one has pricked her. She stands, looking at the bead of blood and suddenly, feels herself become dizzy. Unable to stand. The girl falls to the ground, eyes close. She has been drugged.

When the girl wakes, her first thought is that her wolves have found her and are carrying her back to the ring. Then she notices, there is no soft fur, only hardness. Then that there are bars surrounding her. Gasping she tries to stand, but is still too unsteady to gain her feet. Then she hears it, a sound that puts her in fear of her very life. The deep laugh of the Hunter. He looks into the cage and smiles at her.
“You have led me a fine chase little one, but now you are my property.”

The fae lowers her head into her hands and begins to cry the bitter tears of hopelessness.
