When I read your first two paragraphs, I started to feel my hackles go up, particularly in light of the cover-up we've seen among the priesthood's sexual abuse scandals and police officers protecting their own in Ferguson, Missouri, and elsewhere.

But then I read further and found myself nodding in agreement. Loyalty can be an admirable thing, and a necessary part of survival for law enforcement, fire fighters, and soldiers, but often the most courageous individuals are those who are whistleblowers (much nicer term than "rat"), those who stand up to corruption and say, "Hey, we're no longer being the good guys here!" It's easy to look away and say "I didn't do it," but to stand up and take a stand for what's right rather than what's easy...well, that's my definition of "heroic."
