I've seen this tactic used in chat rooms as well as in the blogs: Person A blocks person B but person A continues to talk about or insult person B. Any respect I have for person A disappears at that point.

I understand that the situation I describe differs from the situation you describe. In the situation you describe I might PM my friend and suggest that she either tone down her behavior or take a break from chat and step away from her computer. I employed that technique more than once when I used to frequent the chat rooms. It's not always effective, but it's worth a shot when the person is a friend.
