gap year: good thing or just spoiling a generation even further

Just curious to what you think of a person taking a "gap" year...by this I mean it is the new thing for rich young people who just graduated high school. Take a full year off to "find yourself' before going to college. The most recent example of this is the eldest obama ..she is going to take a full year off before attending harvard.

This gap year sorta reminds me of all those yuppie moms back in the day that held their back a year at kindergarten. Your would be older/more developed/ would be taller/would be the star of the football team/would get to drive first....qualities that someone convinced all these mothers would give their an edge in school/turn them into world beaters.

I have two opinions on this "gap" subject...first I think we all would "luv" to take a year off ( no matter what age we are) and just bum..er backpack through europe....

(Just not sure how this is gonna help a person decide what we want to be for the rest of our lives)

Coming straight out of highschool, I immediately went to college. Had NO clue what any of these degrees meant or what I wanted to do with my life...I could have used a year to mentally grow up and mature. I would have appreciated college more and not screwed around as much...

okay now the con argument....it just seems to me this is yet another break these are taking...they act like they go to school in japan or something ( 8 hrs a day and then off to night classes). The US bitch about going to school for 6 hrs a day

These already have so many days off of school and then get a freaking spring break to boot!
This seems yet another excuse for these modern not to grow the fuck up...sure take off yet another year to screw around europe and find yourself...( which is code for partying your ass off)
It's like american decided to retard this generations progress into adulthood.
Todays' have more info on careers and the work place..they can schedule to go to various companies for "take your to work day" etc..they can see what certain jobs are and what they pay via the internet.
This is the type of info back in 1987 that I didn't have..

I mean does someone like obama's really need to find herself? She's been to numerous countries/had the best education/had access to any material she ever wanted.

is this just another case of the parents holding a back....did someone tell these parents that it will give their an edge in college?

Oh, I thought a gap year is a good thing? I ended up taking two and travelling the world (not Europe as I had already been to most countries by that stage) has been one of the most amazing experiences in my life.

I'm planning to do something similar when my children go to university. Not that I need to find myself (?) but I just love to travel. I will certainly encourage my children to do the same and I'm already taken them to different places at the younger age. Perhaps they will even want to travel with me before or after uni or then not. Either way travelling has hugely helped me to become who I am but then it can be arguable whether I'm a good person or not
