back to "plugging" oh the joy of winter car repair

well I'm back to "plugging"... a term used to describe the guy that DYI his own car repairs/get his hands greasy/a good ole boy that can fix about anything..

Funny how these guys are a dying breed now a days..

Anyway I almost got killed the other day.. I was driving back to work and this dude pulls out right in front of me. I slammed on my brakes so hard that the left tire actually smoked. I slid for like a foot + and barely missed hitting his car.
His dumb ass was looking left ( up the hill) and he just pulled out into my lane ( jackass never ever looked in my direction( right ..down the hill).
I was doing about 40 mph!

There as no harm/ no foul.. but he got a "dead stare" from me...
to put that look into modern references ( it is like if the death star was human and could really give you a pissed off look) Sooo yeahhhhhh!
Plus He got a wicked "moooooother fuckeeerr" from me.

Anyway that power slide signaled to me that I need to look at my back brakes..
The dreaded "drum brakes" that people ( including myself) have been warned off of doing yourself.
I'm not a big fan of drum brakes..and I rarely touch them....so I was really afraid to do this repair.. I was afraid I couldn't get the drum covers off etc etc

But last night I got the car jacked up/tires off and covers off in like a half an hour....not a problem at all...very easy peasy.

I could see why I was having problems.. the one side ( pad) was thick.. the other? wow was that thin ( not down to the metal yet..but almost there.. it was like that for both sides of the car ( like Holy fuck!).

So now it is just a matter of grabbing a shower/getting my ass down to the parts store and getting new shoes( pads). One literally has to remove a few springs/clips/your e brake chord and then put the new shoes in.

My ass will be out in the cold garage wrestling with these springs/drinking a few beers and probably cursing a few times in between.

But if it solves my braking issue....it will be worth it.

I'm not one of those "pluggers".. I can't fix everything.. But sometimes you just have to overcome your fears and get out there and try.
If nothing else there is a you tube video that tells you exactly how to do the repair...in my case there are like 5 various ones on drum brakes for a ford focus.
