My favorite all-time costume was from first grade, which would have made it 1974. It was Batman...but not one of those cheapie plastic Batman costumes from Kmart...no, this one came off my mother's old Singer sewing machine and rivaled anything in Adam West's wardrobe. When I put it on at school (back in the good old days when they still allowed costume parties), every boy in my class was envious.

I"m not sure what the year was for my favorite Halloween, 77 or 78 maybe, but on Halloween night we had a massive blizzard with giant flakes of wet, heavy snow. Undeterred, we trudged out in our annual door-to-door candy quest. I remember that I was some kind of phantom with a white costume, and I was perfectly camouflaged in the heavy snow...and my best friend had this super cool robot costume made out of cardboard boxes with battery operated lights that was completely ruined before we were halfway done.

Did you ever get out of the house as a child?
Seems like being grounded was a permanent condition .....
A box of tampons --- I'd have loved to see that!

I was just going to ask the same thing benoite said... my god woman I would have started given some thought before doing anything else just to be able to leave the house once in awhile. Katie be honest were you a tom boy as a kid. I ask because you had all those brothers to compete with. You must have been a riot as a kid.
