Fifteen years ago, I left a career in local TV news, but covered a few stupid criminal cases I'll never forget. I had two favorites that really stood out...

The first involved two idiots who robbed a small town bank. They were caught trying to spend cash that they had trimmed all edges off very badly with scissors in an attempt to erase the evidence of a teller-planted exploding dye pack. But the best part of the story came out when they were interrogated after arrest. Police found that these two criminal masterminds made two attempts at robbing this bank...the first was foiled because they showed up in ski masks with shotguns on Memorial Day, and had to go home empty handed because, of course, the bank was closed.

My second favorite involved the hold up of a liquor store. The police arrived quickly at the scene amid snow flurries, only to discover that the suspect had fled on foot, making a clear trail through the fresh powder to the trailer court across the street that led straight to his front door. Not that they would have needed it...the hold up man obscured his face in the robbery, but he wore the same jacket he always wore when visiting the store almost daily for beer and cigarettes.
