Personally, I'd like to see EVERYONE in service industries paid a REAL living wage and see the antiquated culture of "working for tips" ended for good. Employers have been using tipping for decades as an excuse to underpay their employees—it's ridiculous. I'm sick of the entire travel industry nickle and diming us to death with hidden service fees (airline baggage, parking, hidden rental car costs, etc.)...just tell me what it costs, and I'll happily pay it...few things drive me as crazy as "add-on" costs.

Simply put, shareholders expect to be paid and don't give a rats patoutie if the help is. Believe me, these same shareholders will complain loudly if the service is not good, and more than likely the bulk of the shareholders are not going to tip much.

Retailers, hospitality industry (hotel & restaurant, especially fast food) want the tax payer to subsidize. Look at Wal Mart; at one time they gave out instruction on how to claim public benefits o new hires in many state. Even upscale retailers do what they can to avoid paying decent wages and benefits in particular by limiting hours. I forget what chain it is (think it is Abercrombi) who only has part time hours of less than 10 a week for all store employes other than the manager.

Although it hurts the employees of those stores, I prefer to ship at places that have full time employees and as best as I know are paid decently. Some folks think I am dumb for paying more. Well frankly, those stores usually have better service and better merchandise int he first place.

I tip decently in restaurants and have left tips for hotel maids.

How about the crew in ships, I recall every cruises i have been on encouraging several hundred dollar tips, even for 3 day cruises. I wonder how much those waiters and room cleaning folks have to pay back to the company or some union.
