NO peace!

Would you like a little peace and quiet? Do you want to get away from it all, escape the hustle and bustle of the city, and just relax for a few days? Well, I do not recommend the beach - at least not the Central Oregon coast. It is neither peaceful nor quiet here. Between the nearby construction (not the next door neighbor mind you, this is a whole new house going up about half a block away) the constant shrieking/screeching of various species of birds, and the rumbling of passing (visitor) traffic, it is not exactly what you’d call relaxing around here.

If I were to release a “Sounds of the Beach” recording it would sound something like this:

A bird screeching incessantly for about 20 seconds
(3 seconds of silence)
a succession of hammering that lasts 12 seconds
(2 seconds of silence)
more bird screeching
(maybe 5 seconds of silence)
more hammering
(10 full seconds where you hear nothing but wind and surf)
then the sound of a large vehicle lumbering by, and mixed with that more screeching and shrieking from some different birds this time.
(3 seconds of silence)

Only at night is it relatively “peaceful” around here, and that is when punkin and I are probably at our best/most comfortable. If we didn’t have the uncertainty of how early the neighbor will start working (or how loud he will be when he does) to deal with, we would probably stay up all night and sleep the majority of the day away if we could. During the summer, when it gets deplorably hot, keeping that kind of schedule will be essential, but obviously we can’t start doing that until we find a stable home.

I love being outside, but it’s not really much fun here. Even down on the beach there is this constant background noise from the birds, which I find unsettling. It is difficult to escape, so my only real choice becomes the obvious one; retreat into the cabin, where I have more control over my surroundings. When I lock myself in though, I have to worry about the pounding from the next door neighbor starting up, so you can see how this is a less-than-ideal situation for a person who would like to (NEEDS T relax. It’s what I have to work with though, so I am going to make the best of it.

If you want some peace and quiet, lock yourself in a closet with a “Sounds of the Beach” CD playing on an old Walkman, and don’t come out except to eat and use the bathroom. You’ll have a more relaxing time than I am/we are!
