Sorry to hear about this and thank you for your honest and beautiful words.

At times I go down that faking route. I fake it to others and myself that all is well. At times it works, at times not. For instance, I tend to smile harder when I really don't feel like it and fairly often I eventually find myself smiling genuinely. The difference is that people around me don't often know about my inner turmoil but in your case you are all in it.

A while ago, I ran into someone here who had a pulse, a home, a closet ... a real person who really mattered. It ended, and I found myself feeling emotions that I had had when I was much younger. And I realized, a key "mistake" I made in my youth, I had absolutely no chance to avoid. Decades later I had the same problem. I didn't have a chance then. In a small way, it's comforting.

I don't think we can change our emotional patterns. At best, we can recognize them and make sure we're stocked up on bandaids.
