merely a coincidence

If you were to ask, I’d be forced to admit that I technically have two phones. One is personal and one work related. I don’t own the work phone, and don’t pay for it, but spend a minimum of forty hours a week with it in the back left pocket of my pants. The device is not in my name, nor am I connected to it in any way.

My work phone is used for work only, but I am not the only person to ever use it. When I first started working at my day job, I would get random, pre-recorded calls informing me, the bearer of the phone, that my was late for school. My happened to be living with her Mother in Nevada, and going to college, so I was pretty sure it wasn’t her that was tardy. Occasionally, I will get text messages that seem to be for someone very specific, but I do not respond to them. It’s more fun to leave people guessing.

So, the other day my work phone rang, and when I looked at the number of the incoming caller I did not recognize it as local, or one I had recently dialed. I answered anyways, and was treated to a pre-recorded message telling me I was selected for a vacation in Cancun. I hung up, and went back to work. Several hours passed, and eventually I found myself sitting in the break room, sipping on some soup. When my phone rang, I answered, and was treated to the exact same pre-recorded message.

After I hung up, I told a co-worker about the coincidence, but she didn’t find it that unlikely. My two phones are really, in no way, related. The account for the personal phone is under my ex-girlfriend’s name, and she lives an entire city away. My personal number originated in Central Oregon, maybe six years ago, and the work number began in Portland. The area codes aren’t the same – not even close. I think it a highly unlikely coincidence, but I’m a paranoid pothead. What do you think?

It bothered me for the rest of the day. The next morning, I related my story to another co-worker, who admitted to receiving the same call on her work phone. This made me feel a bit better, I’ll admit. The thought that I might be tracked through my devices does disturb me enough that I do my best to turn off anything on my phone that shows where I am/my location. You can definitely call me paranoid for that, and I’ll take the slight in stride. The less information there is to hold against me, the better…
