I agree, but trust is a gift, in a sense. When you trust another to give back, you make yourself vulnerable and tak a chance that they may reject or not respect you. It may not be a "gift" exactly, but you have to give without knowing, only hoping, that they will give. You have to lay open your self and hope. I always thought Dominance was a gift. I think all love is a gift.

So when family members gift gifts at holidays, these are not gifts because they expect gifts in return. I do not actually like this tradition, myself, but according to your definition, you can only really give a gift anonymously or to a stranger, because a friend or family member will usually be expected to give, as well.
