Ahh, things are never as they seem to be...'

Is the bank account zero?

Is Mrs Junior League having an affair with the gardener because Mr JL is away on business or has taken on a lover of his own?

Are Bobby and Suzy hopped up on meds for supposed ADD?

Do they really believe what is being touted at church? How many preachers are dishonored in the end?

For me, it is better to know who I am and not compare or worry about others...just observe and smile.

Don't we all at times? Enjoy your difference from the "norm", it is far more enjoyable. Though you may shock your neighbors, know you are pleasing your Master.

We have all got dirty laundry. We all can feel like fish out of water. Believe me, some of the wealthiest folks are kinkier than you will ever guess. There are dungeons in Beverly Hills and Montecito and similar communities.

I know how you feel, but that's what makes us unique. It can feel lonely at times but I feel that solitude makes us stronger over time.

    Quoting  :

I can never read the phrase, "Gated Community" without thinking of Neal Stephensen's book, "Snowcrash" where his sociology and science are more interesting than his plots. His "burbclaves"—by which he extends the notion of gated community is, are, I think, prescient.

With respect to the wealthy: it turns out that Kink dot com: the business that offers many different subscription video products, is a lucrative business. It is so lucrative in fact that they bought the San Francisco Armory as their permanent studio space and offer part of it to the community for free as a play space.

The rich do share with the less rich—but only when they make their money from the right businesses.

This will be a counterpoint to most of your other comments ... so ...

Really? Easily 40% of those women you look at are voting for the Democrat Party. Think about that: for every 5 of those women you see in their tight preppy bodies, 2 of them are of your same political mind. Beyond that, the wider culture is leaning far toward atheism, and all one needs to do is cast a fair eye and see that the culture (media/entertainment) obsessively leans left and routinely celebrates non-hetero sexuality. Indeed, some of the hottest most open-holed women available when I used to make the BDSM club MC-thing were the tight lil prepsters and the husbands who liked having their wives' assholes opened by strangers. Look around, there's no reason to feel the freak.

Thanks for writing.

Sorry, S but you ARE a FREAK.

You are a FREAK but you have to ask what that really means.

Look at it in terms of comic books. The Amazing Spider-Man is a FREAK because he has powers that allow him to catch criminals and save lives as he is compelled to do by the deep sense of decency that came to him after the death of his uncle/foster father.

The incredible Hulk is a freak because he makes the sacrifice of controlling himself so that the monster within him, an unbreakable engine of mindless destruction, remains inside even though it means that he has to limit his human contact.

Superman, one of the last survivors of the planet Krypton, is a freak because he has enough power to subjugate all of humanity (even for its own benefit) but chooses to live among us as perfectly ordinary, anonymous one of us, only entering into his full, real self in the service of our protection.

You are a freak because you have the power to live a life of the mind in a part of the world famous for its despising profitless abstraction while enjoying a love-life that involves belongs to you and springs not from a copy of Cosmo, but from a set of drives that set you apart from the herd, that makes you different in the way that precious stones are set apart from lumps of coal.

The question is not, "are you a FREAK" because not living in a place like New York, L.A. or San Francisco, you are very different from those around you: the question is," if you were offered the choice, would you set aside your red cape forever and give up the ability to fly?"

it is often easy to make of others what is amenable to one's own preconceptions. Nevertheless, I understand your discomfort.

Class and status-conscious societies create the need for signifiers which require energy to create. At the top of Ancient Roman society, people took three-part baths with slaves to attend them. At the bottom, there were the unwashed plebeians who lived in the streets and, it is said, had night-soil dropped on them.

Rome is also a good illustration of the idea as the inventors of such signs of status as dress: only citizens could wear the toga, only senators could wear a toga with a broad purple border and a tunic with a broad purple stripe down the front. Sumptuary laws regulated the type and number of types of adornments people of different classes were allowed to war in public, technically irrespective of the wearer's wealth.

Not much has changed since then. We still use signifiers with some of them being logically ridiculous. The ubiquitous and useless necktie started out in its historical life as a neck rag worn by Croation mercenaries replacing the neck cloths sported throughout Europe of the type that can be seen in J.A.D. Ingres's Portrait of M. Bertin.

In a very real sense, the participation in the status game is a trap that you have avoided by not playing it: imagine the energy it takes to look the way they do, the time and money it takes to live a life that makes having the right haircut as (psychologically) important as eating or breathing.

Imagine walking up to nine tenths of them in the company of heavily-armed men and saying, "Tell me why literature is important or die."

Many conservative Republican females would love to be a slutty "freak" too - they are just too scared to try it and have nobody to trust with that secret!

Their husbands do not understand any perverted dreams and thoughts and needs!
