As much as I understand the importance of doing research when you are new, you don't always know what exactly to research for. Or worse still, you might not have a clue what you are getting into. When I engaged in BDSM (albeit light) activies when I was young I did so 'naturally'. I hadn't, therefore, read anything at all. We had no safe words etc. I am now horrified by what I did on few occasions. I certainly had no idea that my partners may have needed any aftercare. So no, I would have deserved to be called a 'real' Domme then.

So indeed, it is better to do research than beforehand.

(I clearly need to revisit the issue of aftercare with my Dom as we have totally ignored it as I usually don't need it - but as it happens I am in the middle of a sub-drop as can be read from my earlier post)
