Similarly always give without expecting anything back (and somehow miraculously life gives you more than you could have ever imagined).

Very true. I used to be very active in volunteer organizations. But when it got to a point where people expected me to do things instead of recognizing I may do them with an reasonable expectation other might join in, It was not longer satisfying and I felt it was time to move on. I do things becasue i wanted to do them, not becasue it was expected.
