I miss some of those places along the highway. Frankly, here in the UA some of those places were pretty mediocre too. Theae were mostly chans too. The nifty places were off the beaten path. Now those are worth searching out. But when we are traveling, often time if of the essence and a side trip that take an hour or two, may well be worth the time. I guess Diners, Dives & Drive Ins needs to do a travel map with those places listed along with maps to find them.

Up in Canada, in Seaschelt there was a place not far off the main road where I would stop before catching the ferry boats.

When you get into big cities, those hidden places (not so well hidden from locals can be very long waits.

Where I live now in Wisconsin, not too many really standout places with unique foods.

Ah yes.... when I was younger, we used to travel by car a lot. It was fun stopping at our favorite places and taking a turn off the beaten path to enjoy some of the mom and pop offerings and local flavor

Now, When I drive, I pack what I want, so I don't have to stop, but for breaks. My road trips are primarily just to get me there and home, now. I don't eat out much at chain places and definitely don't like to do it while traveling, anymore. If it is something I can get at home, then it is no longer special. I want my vacations to be something more than just the same old, same old. Thanks for prompting a few nice memories.

I understand what you are saying but honestly with my gluten free diet I can't eat at any of those places. We RV and drive a lot of highways from state to state often we just park and eat in the RV because that way I know my food is safe and not going to make me sick. I can't do "fast food" at all except a salad at subway or chick fil a grilled nuggets. It's sad but bob evans and denny's at least have trained staff and gluten free menus.
