奥の細道 (Oku no Hosomichi)

Redolent of Matsuo Basho's haiku narrative of his journey on a "narrow path to the interior" this will be a journey through my innermost ruminations.

Spring in the Air (and why you should)

All kinds of critters are showing up:

Saw a herd of four small deer still wearing their winter coats.
Bear scat in three places on the trail.
A tufted titmouse sat next to me on the railing of my deck and sang several choruses of five of the reputed eight songs in its repertoire for me, finishing to the thunderous applause of the beating wings of a pair of Canada Geese as they roared down their watery runway and launched themselves lustily into the sky.

Now if that little wood nymph I so fondly remember standing on the edge of my dock over a year ago will just show up... *sigh*.

Got the Second Shot

My drove me downtown to get my second shot of the vaccine. The nurse warned us that the reaction to the second one was usually worse, apparently because the immune system is primed by the first shot to recognize and attack the antibodies in the intruder. It's been more than 12 hours and I don't feel any different.

In addition to the relief at completing the vaccine regimen, visiting an area of the city I hadn't seen for a couple of years provided an added benefit. What had in earlier years been a hangout for hookers and drug pushers has been gentrifying. The hundred-year-old stately brick buildings have come back to life and we spotted several promising eating and drinking establishments that we immediately put on our post-covid must-visit list. The supermarket where I got my shot was huge and as well-appointed as a Wegmans, with luxury apartments up above and more apartments over a validated-parking garage right across the street. City living at its finest.

There's life out there, folks, if we can just have the discipline to follow Dr. Fauci's guidance.

Back from Japan, The Delights of Hot Springs

Japanese Hot Springs Resorts come in all sizes and varieties. I chose one of the best for my visit... the onsen at Seni Iwa no Yuu in Nagano Prefecture.
These hot springs are unusual in that the main springs are inside a cave which is mixed bathing. The myth about Japan's hot springs is that mixed bathing is nude.
With a few exceptions mainly on the northern island of Hokkaido, only the private baths are nude. However, there are plenty of private baths where nude mixed bathing is the rule. In the cave bath at Seni Iwa no Yuu, bathing suits are provided to all bathers. The lights are dim, however, and there are plenty of dead-end offshoots within the cave, so the opportunities for a bit of hanky panky still abound.

The main fun is in the private baths, both indoor and outside, which are all discreetly screened off from view. I wasn't traveling with a female companion, so I didn't have an opportunity to avail myself of the privacy of the baths for a bit of fun, as I do at my private lakeside hot bath in Virginia. I did manage to be invited to correct that oversight if I visit Japan this May for the anniversary celebration of a certain lady friend's business establishment. It seems that one of her girls is opening a spa in Miyagi Prefecture shortly.

Meanwhile, I hope you will enjoy the photos of the pools of one of the premier hot spring onsens in Japan.

... and the Livin' is Easy (updated 9/12)

It's summertime, my favorite part of the year in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The fish are jumpin' and the cattails are high.

I always shift gears in the summer. I relax, tune in to nature and tune out the noise. Life gets less complicated.

In early June a relationship I was looking forward to expanding terminated. Ending it was surprisingly easy, despite the promise with which it began. I won't go into the details of why I was willing to let it go. You don't care, and I don't particularly feel like sharing. I will say, however, that the intellectual and erotic elements were remarkably well balanced. We shared a wide variety of interests.

When it ended, I realized I had a list of about five other women I had put on hold to go through before I could turn my attention to summer. One of them was easy. We hadn't communicated much, so I didn't have a very good sense of what she was like. After a quick dinner meeting with no real communication, I still didn't. I did make an effort, though I wasn't as charming as I can be. She didn't. I'm not sure why. I didn't ask. I wasn't charming because I was a little taken back by the vibes, I guess. If I don't feel a response I find it hard to put forth a serious effort. No chemistry. Check. Move on.

The next one on the list may be easier. She's suddenly dropped out of sight. This has happened before, so I wasn't particularly concerned at first, but the absence seems to be unusually long, so I suspect she's gone. Too bad. She seemed likely to be just a tease, but she was conveniently located and made all the right noises. Check. Move on.

The third one has been hard to get a fix on. She's the most conveniently located of all. Lives in the same neighboring town where my beautiful girl (see photo below) lived for about five years. I think she's coming off the list because she seems so conflicted about an old relationship. (I still see mbg frequently -- she's comes by my mountain retreat regularly (July 11, 18, 25) to spend the day -- but that's another story.) Mbg and I have gotten together every week this summer. She just left a few minutes ago after giving me a fabulous massage and as I kissed her goodbye she invited me to climb up Maryland Heights with her next Wednesday (sept. 19).

That leaves two more. One is really sweet, maybe even a keeper, and seems really serious about becoming my baby girl/pet, but is probably not going anyplace because of the distance (an 8-hour drive) and the lurking possibility of a chemistry problem.

The second one (whom you know as Jenny in several stories we've written together that are included in the index below No Way Out Belle de Jour Jenny) has been has been an incredible internet connection for a long time, and the chemistry and other attractions are amazing, but the distance, and possibly the age difference, could make things difficult -- though age hasn't been a problem for me with the girl in the photo.

So now it looks like my summer is free. I can spend it with the two women I connect best with (one of whom I haven't mentioned, and won't). When the summer's over, I'll have to decide whether to come back or not. My money's on not. I'll let you know.

Last one into the lake . . . !

Have a happy summer!

Here's a place for you to leave a note that you don't want the rest of the class to see (I check her mail slot regularly for messages ).

If you'd like to start a private dialog, and don't have email, you can create a mailbox like this on your blog and we can correspond that way without our messages being visible to others. Leave me a note if you can't figure out how to do this, and I'll leave you a public note here or on your blog about how to do it. If you don't have a blog yet, then you'll have to quickly create one and put a mailbox on it, or check back here occasionally to see my response, then the rest of our correspondence can be private.

Some of my readers have found more enjoyable read the formatted, punctuated, version of my "No Way Out" story that I have posted in the "Erotic Stories" section of the Magazine. The original, posted earlier here, was created in a stream-of-consciousness, unpunctuated style as I raced to get written. For those of you new the story, revolves around the misfortune of a beautiful, successful young happily married woman makes one irretrievable mistake and involves an extensive cast of memorable characters, of a sort not usually found in stories on this site. (I should apologize for the first three chapters. It took me a while to get the spacing right. Someday I'll edit them.)

The most satisfying part of writing this series has been the interchange I have enjoyed as a result with the women have followed the story. They are in many ways the actual lead character. I hope you will join their company, and the exchange of commentary that we have started together.

For your convenience I have created an indexed link to these chapters below:
