this is one of the year's outstanding movies. like tortoise's "beacons" it breaks the mould, breaks the expectations of the audience and delivers work that defies categorisation.
it's a film that i will see again. the biggest problem i have with it is the costume tilda swinton wore at the cafe. the brown leather boots were mis-cast ... they should have been white!
darn you mr jarmusch.
it could have been a 2 hour advertising spot for ozwald boetang or paul smith. the protagonist is seen in various colours of the same natty shiny suit, walking, lying on bed staring at the ceiling os sitting at various cafes drinking espressos.
spain looks voluptuous. the interiors, the landscapes, the textures and colours of the hotels, the trains, lounges and bars are all incandescent, alluring, erotic sometimes dreamlike and artificial as if jj is harking back to hitchcock in 'strangers on a train'- real people vs back projected moving landscape.
christopher doyle's cinematography is luscious, lustrous and lascivious. the soundtrack is jagged, mercurial, like an engine in a steamship at full steam ahead.
everyone in the movie sports optical wear except the main protaginst who's 'working'- it's a job i wouldn't mind doing myself meeting odd characters, swapping matchboxes and eating tiny handwritten messages/codes before washing them down with coffee.
the journey like any journey is fun, boring, mysterious, thought provoking and very playful at spinning out an existential poem without any purpose.
it's about LOOKING at what we see 'grokking' the essence of life's transient beauty.
the girl offers herself for sex but there will be no fulfillment in the sexual act.
it doesn't matter that he's working.
in his mind the PRESENCE of her is enough to enjoy
as is the pleasure he attains when looking across madrid to the skyline.
the reason he doesn't have sex with the girl is that the suit he's wearing is not his own, therefore he cannot be himself and do what he wants to do because another persona controls him. the role of assassin.
the camera only allows us to see the main protagonist on the surface, his skin, his suit, his hands and feet.
yet, it's telling us that he's deep, he's in touch with his core he partakes in tai chi.
there is a contradiction in his choice of tailoring, the immaculately groomed look and his inner life.
like you or i we project a mask of allure in order to travel through this life with ease with some kind of dignity because inside we are all the same
scared of death. scared of not being able to SEE.
go see it.

i've been playing 'beacons' non-stop
the last two days. this is music that
makes me feel alive, that makes me think,
it's music that feels like an x-ray
penetrating through my bone marrow.
it sucks me into the blackest black hole
only to be re-born in the core of the sun.
i wish i had a decent bloody hi-fi to hear
every mesmerising nuance of this work.
there are too many influences to list right now.
the title is magnificently succinct.
outstanding tracks are :
1 high class slim came floatin' in
3 northern something
4 gigantes
8 minors
10 de chelly
i think the last track is the weakest
which is no.11 - charteroak foundation
it feels too familiar.
penumbra is also great.
i was going to try to write a review
but i'm not very good at that.
buy this record.
8/10

RAPELAY is a video game designed and produced in japan for the home market, however it was recently available on ebay to purchase from individuals in the u.k. until complaints about it's deviant content have forced it's withdrawal.
what a sad day for deviant capitalism.
we all know the japanese have their peculiar fetishes, but i was genuinely intrigued by the concept behind this game, and the effects of playing it. it would be fascinating to record the physical and mental responses from a typical male playing it and his girlfriend watching it while he played.
when she experienced pleasure he experienced repulsion.
the thing is, is it morally wrong to produce and sell such a game?
there already exists thousands of games simulating serial murders, war and urban crime syndicates, where countless people are dispatched without the bat of an eyelid, so what's the problem with a mother on a train and then her two virgin daughters?
if she gets pregnant, you can force her to have an abortion. you can even take pleasure in tears welling up in her eyes.
or, you can select gang mode and have a few mates join in the fun.
does this kind of filth inspire men to or does it just satisfy a male fantasy that would never be considered in real life?
if there was a female equivalent game or a homosexual/lesbian video game, should they also be banned?

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN YOU'VE LAMENTED THE POWER THAT WOMEN HAVE HAD OVER YOU?

leonard cohen :
i never looked at it that way. there's times when i've lamented, there's times when i've rejoiced, there's times when i've been deeply indifferent. you run through the whole gamut of experience. and most people have a woman in their heart, most men have a woman in their heart and most woman have a man in their heart. there are people that don't. but most of us cherish some sort of dream of surrender. but these are dreams and sometimes they're defeated and sometimes they're manifested.

i stood naked by the kitchen window this morning watching the swallows soar and dive with their halloween siren tussling the clouds and leaves in an capricious dyonisian joy.
i didn't care what the day was going to bring or if i'd ever be invited again to dance in the cool breeze that swept away the heartbreaking dream that had startled my slumber.
being here being alive happy in my own skin is enough to be grateful for.

Jaqueline has been having a fling with a married man from Indiana since I left town. She confessed that she was heartbroken and declared her undying love for me. What should I say? She said her love runs deeper than gender. My dear, it was a platonic friendship. I had no physical desire for her flesh. I've always felt she was a voyeur, i never understood her libidoless devotion to me (and it seems a sexless semester with a bohemian academic.) He's flown back to the States and now her emails choke my inbox, and text messages arrive after midnight. I haven't replied to her last mail yet, nor her texts. The silence is refreshing. I will write to her when I feel like it.
